Li Tianyi in Rape Trial

The son of a prominent Chinese army general is to go on trial for rape, in a case that has actually sparked heated debate.


Li Tianyi, 17, is charged in addition to 4 others with raping the woman at a Beijing hotel in February after having drinks at a bar, state media say.


He is the son of army Gen Li Shuangjiang, known for his performances of patriotic songs on television.


Li Tianyi was punished to detention for a year in 2011 over a roadway rage event which caused an outcry.


The young adult, who was only 15 at the time, lagged the wheel of a BMW automobile without licence plates in Beijing when he faced a middle-aged couple in another car obstructing his method.


He attacked the couple and yelled at shocked spectators, informing them not to “attempt call authorities”.


His dad apologised to the couple over the incident.


Correspondents stated at the time that many in China saw the incident as an additional example of the kids of the effective and rich acting as if they were above the law.
