Afghanistan: 20 eliminated in militant bomb, gun attacks

Kabul, Afghanistan – A series of attacks in Afghanistan claimed the lives of 20 people– all however one of them civilians– in the area of less than 24 hours, officials said Saturday.


10 individuals passed away when a group of insurgents attacked an authorities checkpoint in the country’s western Herat province Friday night, police spokesman Abdul Rauf Ahmadi stated.


After exchanging fire with authorities at the checkpoint in Karokh district, killing one officer, the militants opened fire on a nearby outdoor tents housing building employees for a road-building project. Nine of them passed away, Ahmadi stated.


Roadside blasts in southern Helmand province declared an additional 8 lives, a statement from the office of the rural governor said.


3 ladies were gotten rid of by a roadside mine while walking home in Sangin area Friday night, it said.


5 others, 3 kids, a guy and a woman, were gotten rid of Saturday early morning when their van hit a roadside mine grown by the insurgents in Marjah district, the statement said.


2 more individuals were gotten rid of and 3 wounded in western Farah province Saturday early morning when a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a civilian hospital in Farah Rud district, stated Fawad Askari, a spokesperson for the rural authorities chief.


Civilian casualties in Afghanistan increased 23 % in the first 6 months of this year, the United Nations stated in a report launched at the end of July.


The boost in injuries and fatalities so far this year was mainly driven by the stepped-up use of improvisated explosive gadgets, the U.N. Assistance Objective in Afghanistan stated in its report.
