3. Does anyone actually use it? Sometimes I find that once an object finds a permanent home, it just becomes a part of the landscape without ever being used. This rule is especially true in the kitchen, with extra utensils and gadgets from Christmas past collecting dust and filling the junk drawer. If you aren using it at least annually it can probably be safely donated.

We don all have enough free time to devote to this daunting task, and that much focusing at one time can be exhausting. I find that I can spend as little as 10 minutes in a chosen drawer or cabinet whenever time permits, periodically, and make small steps toward achieving my somewhat ongoing goal. I need to remind myself to stay on task and find a way to make more space for the things we really use and want to have around.

In preparation for the holiday, I am going to spend a few minutes each day creating more storage space. It a great chance to make a large donation to a charitable organization. To stay motivated and productive, I have a few guidelines in mind to help me purge.

I feel like a bit of a Scrooge, but right now I don want a single thing for Christmas. As thankful as I am to receive something that people have used hardearned money to buy, getting new toys for my toddler, and clothes and gadgets for me just means more things I have to store in my house. I can’t seem to even find a spot to store all the gifts I’m buying to give. It’s hard to believe there’s anything we could possibly need with a house so full of stuff.

Like many people, I have limited storage and closet space. For the past few months I been on a mission to get organized and eliminate any unnecessary items, as well as, find the appropriate home for the things to keep. It seems like a constant project with plenty of nooks and crannies filled to capacity.

2. Does my child still play with this toy? Toys seem to multiply overnight. Recruit your children to help decide what toys they are ready to part with. An easy starting point is removing the toys with missing pieces and broken parts. With so many children without the ability to get new toys, it a perfect time of year to make some donations. If you having trouble eliminating put a handful of older toys away in a box. Bring the box out next month and see if they get put back into rotation.

4. Is it with other ‘like’ things, in a spot where you will use it? Perhaps this keeper needs to be relocated to be with his cousins. My mom is always reminding me that like things go together. Once you get everything related in one space, you often find some can be eliminated. In my house that tends to be reusable water bottles, I think I have them in three different places. I also probably have three water bottles per person in the house, which is really not necessary.

1. Do you really need it anymore? I struggle with letting go of items that I might need in the future. I always find an excuse to keep it until the next time I trying to create space. For example, I been holding on to a pair of iceskates for at least 20 years on the off chance I might want to use them. It silly because they can easily be rented and would eliminate the space they take up in the closet. In the end holding on to random unused items just prolongs making a decision to let them go.
